CHAPTER I`
INTRODUCTION
This
chapter explains about: background of study, research problem, and the aim of study, significance of the
study, limitation of the study, definition of key terms and
organization of writing.
1.1 BACKGROUND
Educational change is not a
matter of new techniques and resources but fundamentally of shifts in the
balance between system and sensitivity, process and person, institution and
individual (Bowers
1987:4). Process and instruction are
a term used by teachers
to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students.
The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behavior. It is possibly the
most difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers; indeed experiencing
problems in this area causes some to leave teaching altogether
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/classroom_managemenent).
Teacher must do purpose National
Education by means of working out the eight National Educational Standards
(standard of content, process, competence, Education and educational personal,
facilities and equipment, management, financing, assessment) which ‘means the
minimal criteria about the Education system in the whole jurisdiction of the
Republic of Indonesia (Government Reguation
No. 19 tahun 2005).
Teaching is “a means to an end –
a complex of activities, strategies, mechanisms, invitations, stimuli and
rhetorical ploys designed to help students learn and to become better learners”
(Chambers and Gregory, 2006: 40). Chambers and Gregory (2006:
44) outline the theoretical foundation on learning and education. In such a
strong introduction, both ones stressed that learning is independent to
teaching.
Based on the explanation above,
the writer would like to say that instruction is a process to make people or
learner gain knowledge about thing they do not know before; learning could be
happen through formal and informal instruction. Informal instruction is a "lifelong process" through
which people acquire attitudes, values, skills and knowledge mainly from the
mass media (television,
video games and movie or film), from daily
experiences, such as those made at work, at play, while talking with our
neighbors and from various kind of interactions, in general. It is apparent
that informal learning is rather related to incidental learning (http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/informal_learning).
The character of a good teacher
according to Harmer (1998: 1)
covers some views such as teacher should make their lesson interesting, teacher must love his or her job, teacher must have lost of knowledge, not only his or her subject, and the teacher must be entertainer. Those consideration proposal are important to be considered by those whose job as a teacher.
covers some views such as teacher should make their lesson interesting, teacher must love his or her job, teacher must have lost of knowledge, not only his or her subject, and the teacher must be entertainer. Those consideration proposal are important to be considered by those whose job as a teacher.
The Ron Clark story was a story
that had a lot to do with the lessons which have been learning on paradigms.
The way seeing the world in terms of
visual sense of sight, but terms of understanding or interpreting. People’s
paradigms are based on their environment, behavior, attitude, post experiences
and beliefs and also your values.
The story is about a teacher who
is in a nice town with decent students. This teacher always encourages his
students to go for their dreams and they could be anything they want to be.
When they make his own personal parking space he sees it as his tombstone, or
where he will spend the rest of his life.
The writer is interested to
select this movie because the main characters in this movie provided the reader
some moral values conveyed the moral value implied among others such as:
courage, hard work and self sacrifice. The movie is one of good to be chosen as
a supplementary material enrichment in instruction.
Now days, many teachers only
teach the students without paying attention the students’ ability in learning
the material but the teacher only chase the time and finish the material,
whereas the character of a good teacher should make their lessons interesting
and make the students be able to understand the material.
Based
on the explanation above, the writer would like to conduct a research under the
title “An Analysis On The Character of A Teacher In “The Ron Clark Story”
Movie By Randa Haines”.
1.2 RESEARCH PROBLEM
Based
on the background above, the writer would like to formulate in the forms of
this study as follows:
What
are the characters of a good teacher in “The
Ron Clark Story” movie by Randa Haines?
1.3
THE
AIM OF STUDY
The
aim of the study is to analyse and describe:
The character of a teacher in “The Ron Clark Story”
movie by Randa Haines.
1.4
THE
SIGNIFICANCES OF STUDY
The
significances of this study are:
1 Implication
This
study will support the statement of
James Harmer (1998:3) which say that Good teacher is someone cares more about
their students’ learning than they do about their own teaching. Teacher can
never be quite sure what their students think of them, however. The least
predictable things can affect their pupils’ perception. The teacher needs to
have dress sense-not always the same of boring suits and ties.
2 Application
The result of this
study may become source of information for English
teacher. To give information how to be a good English teacher and to give information for
someone who wants to do a research that have similar topic.
1.5
LIMITATION
OF THE STUDY
This study is only focused on the
character of a good teacher in “The Ron Clark Story” movie by Randa Haines.
1.6
DEFINITION
OF TERMS
1)
Character
Character is feature which possess moral straigh. An author may present his
character either directly or inderictly (Kennedy 1991: 47).
2)
Good
teacher
Good teacher is someone cares more about their
students’ learning than they do about teacher own teaching. Teacher can never
be quite sure what their students think of them, however. The least predictable
things can affect their pupils’ perception. The teacher needs to have dress
sense-not always the same of boring suits and ties (Harmer, 1998:3).
3)
Movie
Movie is a modern of drama. Movie is
one of the best arts in the world. Movie is a part of literature which designed
by actors and actress Robert and Jacob (1995: 11) define movie as specialized
type of drama. Movie includes prose of fiction because all the stories and all
the characters are not real. Films help to bypass some intellectual barriers to
learning (Brown et all, 1973: 181).
4)
The
Ron Clark Story
The
Ron Clark Story is a movie by Randa Haines which tell about a teacher who is in
a nice town with decent students. This teacher always tells his students to go
for their dreams and that they could be anything they want to be (The Ron Clark
Story movie).

ORGANIZATION
OF WRITING
This writing is divided into
three chapters. The first chapter is Introduction. It consists of background,
problem of study, the aim of study, the significances of study, scope of
writing, definition of term and organization of writing. The second chapter is
Literature review. It consists of instruction, approach, good teacher, and
summary of the movie. The third chapter is Research Methodology. It consists of
research method, data resources, research instrument, and research procedure
and data analysis.
CHAPTER II
LITERATUR REVIEW
This chapter present the review which supported this study. It
discussed aabout instruction, approach, character
of good teacher, and summary of the Ron Clark story.
2.1 Instruction
Here, in
this section, Chambers and Gregory (2006: 44) outline the theoretical
foundation on learning and education. In such a strong introduction, both ones
stressed that learning is independent to teaching. In conjunction with this,
however, they initiate the following lines on their matching where one could
view on learning; 1) To have
particular objects. 2) To imply
certain levels or standards of achievement.3) Generally,
to be worthwhile/non-trivial: involving the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skills that
are seen as desirable and important or useful.
Referring back to relate between learning and
teaching, again, highlight further on teaching as of central of activities,
where; 1) They must be conducted with
the intention of bringing about learning. 2) They must
indicate or exhibit what is to be learnt. 3) They must
do this in a way which is intelligible to, and within the capacities of, the
learners.
As many
as possible of source, if should be found,
at least, a few of keywords that closely related to the concept of learning.
Wiliams (2001: 12) headlines the concept as of “the transmission of knowledge
from one person, the expert, to another, the novice. By nature, teacher parcels
knowledge to students through planned and controlled chunks or instructional
events.
Referring
back to the concept of learning, the constructivists indicate that learning
concerns in “the ways in which learners organize and change their own behavior
and understandings to produce changes in themselves which they value have
meaning to them” (Williams, 2001: 12). Of this view, we (teacher education) need
to set up our methodologies that enable learners to construct their explicit
knowledge; therefore, “what they know, what they believe, where they are and
also who they are” may come into outcomes (Williams, 2001: 13).
2.2 Approach
Approach, method and technique are
the three terms which are often overlapped in language teaching. People often
mention one of them but they refer to another. Approach is the level of the
theories; method is the plan of language teaching which is consistent with the
theories, and technique carry out a method.
In other words, the arrangement of the three is that approach is
axiomatic, method is procedural and technique is implementation (Richards and
Rodgers, 2001: 19)
Strategy training can help students make
effective use of multiple strategies. Metacognitive strategies help students
keep themselves on track; cognitive, memory, and compensation strategies
provide the necessary intellectual tools; and affective and social strategies
offer continuous emotional and interpersonal support (Richards and Renandya,
2002:130).
Beckman and Klinghammer (2006: 73) define
a strategy as “a tool, plan, or method used for accomplishing a task.” Of
course, teaching strategy and learning strategy are of two concepts to have in
mind.
Reigeluth (1983:18-19), the expert on the
instructional design introduces strategies for classroom teaching practice like
as follows.
a.
Organizational-Strategy
The
strategy shows cases the elemental methods for organizing the subject matter
content that has been selected for instruction. Seeing through the importance
of the strategy beyond the purpose of teaching and learning, then, the author
categorizes it into two categories, namely:
First,
Micro Strategy constitutes the elemental methods for organizing the instruction
on a single idea. For example: A single concept, principle, etc. The strategy
component covers, such as definition, example, practice, and alternative
representation.
Second,
macro strategy that includes elemental methods for organizing those aspects if
instruction that relate to more one idea. For example: Sequencing (planning and
sequencing instructional events). Current curriculum provides five events to
follow, namely observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and
communicating.
b. Delivery Strategy
The
second strategy according to Reigeluth (1983: 18) shares about the elemental
methods for conveying the instruction to the learner and/ or for reciving and
responding to input from the learner. Delivery strategy includes: Media,
teacher, textbook (and their characteristics) are the major part of delivery
strategy concerns.
c. Management Strategy
This
strategy deals with the elemental methods for making decisions about which
organizational and delivery strategy components to use when, during the
instructional process (Reigeluth 1983: 19). How important is management
strategy that teachers should have in their competence the management
techniques to run out their classroom and situations.
Beckman and Klinghammer (2006: 57-64), two
experts from University of Oregon, showcase a practical module on managing
large classes. From the module, several parts are significant for you to know
and; therefore, benefit for you would be classroom management, both in
standardized or large classes.
Referring back to the three strategies, it
can be state each that strategy concern in different major condition. The organizational
strategy rest on the characteristics of subject matter and goal; The Delivery
strategy, on constraints; management strategy, on students’ characteristics.
2.3 Character of a Good Teacher
“Good
teacher always understand about education and life as one and have used
everything at their command to vitalize the learning process through the five
senses. In this endeavor the use of audio visual aids always be an integral
part of education from traditional devices to modern technological devices like
movies, radio, tape recorders and television. These devices enable the English
teacher to enrich and supplement the curriculum in providing perceptual and
auditory experience as a basis for language development (Sumardiyani and
Sakhiyya, 2007: 85)”.
This
is the basis for his teaching; though certainly not an iron law, for a good
teacher will always adapt when he discovers that his class generally knows more
than he had anticipated, or when unexpected problems occur. Some people insist
in putting in the timing for each item in the scheme of work but there are
strong arguments against this (Broughton et all 1980: 177).
A
teacher’s good humor and sympathetic understanding of his problems have stopped
many a student from withdrawing from a course when faced, as many are, with the
pressures of a full-time job and English classes several nights a week
(Broughton et all 1980: 193). A good department can produce outstanding results
from a mediocre teacher, but a bad department, insensitively run, can drive
good teachers out of the profession (Broughton et all 1980: 210).
The
character of good teacher according to Harmer (1998:1-3):
Although,
the character and personality is a crucial issue in the classroom, by far the
greatest number of responses to the question ‘What makes a good teacher?’
especially in the first grade.
1)
They should make their
lessons interesting so students don't fall in them.
2)
Teacher must love their
job if they really enjoy their job that will make the lessons more interesting.
Teachers
who look fed up or unhappy with what they are doing tend to have a negative
effect on their students. When you observe good teacher you will notice that,
even when/if they are feeling terrible (outside the classroom), they put on a
good ‘teacher’s face’ when they enter the classroom.
3)
Teachers have lots of
knowledge, not only of his subject. The preoccupation with the teacher’s
personality is reflected here too: teacher should not be afraid to bring their
own interest and lives into the classroom (within reason, of course).
4)
Entertainer has a
positive sense not negative sense.
Students
enjoy being entertained and amused. However a balance has to be struck between
entertainment (which often gives teachers enjoyable feedback) and
teaching/learning. Sometimes, the former can overwhelm the latter.
Sally
Brown and Donald McIntyre in Harmer (1991:3) selected group of a good teachers,
chosen by their pupils. They wanted to find out how these ‘good teachers’ did
their job so they asked them about their teaching. This is what they found out.
The most obvious common feature of the different teacher’s account was that in
response to our question about their teaching they almost always talked about
what their pupils were doing. A simple answer to the question ‘What makes a
good teacher?’ therefore, is that good teachers care more about their own
teaching. Teachers can never be quite sure what they students think of them,
however. The least predicable things can affect their pupils’ perception.
2.4 Teacher’s Attitude
The
way that teachers talk to the students-the manner in which they interact with
them-is one of the crucial teacher skills, but it does not demand technical
expertise (Harmer
1998: 3-6).
It does, however, require teacher to empathy with the people they are talking
to. One group of people who seem to find it fairly natural to adapt their
language to their audience are parents when they talk to their young
children. Studies show that they use
more exaggerated tones of voice, and speak with less complex grammatical
structures than they would if they were talking to adults. Their vocabulary is
generally more restricted too and the attempt to make eye contact is greater.
They generally do these things unconsciously.
Though
teacher and students are not ‘rough-tune’ the language is a skill they have in
common. Rough-tuning is that unconscious simplification which both parents and
teachers make. Neither group sets out to get the level of language exactly
correct for their audience. They rely, instead, on a general perception of what
is being understood by the people listening to them. Their empathy allows them
to almost feel whether the level of language they are using is appropriate for
the audience they are addressing (Harmer 1998: 3).
Experienced
teacher rough-tune the way they speak to students as a matter of course. Newer
teacher need to concentrate their focus on their students’ comprehension as the
yardstick by which to measure their own speaking style in the classroom. Apart
from adapting their language, experienced teachers also use physical movement:
gesture, expressions, and mime. It becomes almost second nature to show
happiness and sadness, movement and time sequences, concepts using these
techniques. They become part of the language teacher use, especially with
students at lower level (Harmer 1998: 3).
Based
on the explanation above the writer would to say teacher’s attitude very
important to described some of the qualities which good teachers possess: an
ability to give interesting classes, using the full range of their personality;
the desire to empathize with students, treating them all equally however
tempting it is to do otherwise; and knowing all their names.
2.5 Teacher’s Instruction
This
issue of how to talk to students becomes crucial when teachers are giving their
students instruction. The best activity in the world is a waste of time if the
students don’t understand what it is they are supposed to do. There are two general
rules for giving instruction: they must be kept as simple as possible, and they
must be logical. Before giving instruction, therefore, teachers must ask
themselves the following questions: what is the important information I am
trying to convey? What must the students know if they are to complete this
activity successfully? Which information do they need first? Which should come
next? (Harmer 1998: 4).
When
teacher gives
instructions, it is important for them to check that the students have
understood what they are being asked to do. This can be achieved either by
asking a student to explain the activity after the teacher has give instruction
or by getting someone to show the other people in the class how the exercise
work. Where students all share the same mother tongue (which the teacher also
understands), a member of the class can be asked to translate the instruction
as a check that they have understood them (Harmer 1998: 4).
Based
on the explanation above the writer would to say teacher’s instruction in very
important to investigated the kind of language teachers use with students. It
should at all times be comprehensible, and especially when giving instruction,
it should be clear and well staged.
2.6 Classroom Interaction
There
is a continuing debate about the amount of time teacher should spend talking in
class. Trainees’ classes are sometimes criticized because there is to much TTT
(Teacher Talking Time) and not enough STT (Student Talking Time). Getting
students to speak-to use the language they are learning-is a vital part of a
teacher’s job. Students are the people who need the practice, in other words,
not the teacher. In general terms, therefore, a good teacher maximizes student talking time
and minimizes teacher talking time.
Good teacher talking time
may have beneficial qualities, however. If teacher know how to talk to the
students-if they know how to rough-tune their language to the students’ level,
but which they can more or less understand. Such ‘comprehensible input’ (a
student receive rough-tuned input in relaxed and unthreatening way-is an
important feature in language acquisition. Teacher
talking time works! (Harmer 1998:4).
A
classroom where the teacher’s voice drones on and on day after day and where
you hardly ever hear the students say anything is not one that most teachers
and students would approve of, however.
Teacher talking time can be terribly over-used.
Conversely, a class where the teacher seems reluctant to speak is not very
attractive either. The best lessons are ones where student talking time
is maximized, but where at appropriate moments during the lesson the teacher is
not afraid to summarize what is happening, tell a story, enter into discussion
etc. good teacher use their common sense and experiences to get the balance
right (Harmer 1998: 4).
Based
on the explanation above the writer would to say teacher’s interaction is very
important to discussed the relative merits of students talking time (STT).
Teacher talking time (TTT) can have uses helping students to acquire language,
but should not predominate at the expense of students talking time (STT).
2.7 Teacher’s Behavior
One
of the greatest enemies of successful teaching is student boredom. (Harmer
1998: 5) He stated this is often caused by the deadening predictability of much
classroom time. Students frequently know what is going to happen in class and
they know this because it will be the same as what happened in the last
class-and a whole string of classes before that. Something has to be done to
break the chain. Jhon Fanselow in Harmer
suggested that, both for the teacher’s sanity and the students’ continuing
involvement, teachers need to violate their own behavior patterns. If a teacher
normally teaches in casual clothes, he should turn up one day wearing a suit.
If a teacher normally sits down, he should stand up. If he or she is normally
noisy and energetic as a teacher, he or she should spend a class behaving
calmly and slowly. Each time teachers break one of their own rules, in other
words, they send a ripple through the class. That ripple is a mixture of
surprise and curiosity and it is s perfect starting point for student
involvement (Harmer 1998:5).
The
need for surprise and variety within a fifty-minute lesson is also
overwhelming. If, for example, students spend all of that time writing
sentence, they will probably get bored. But if, in those fifty minutes, there
are a number of different tasks with a selection of different topics, the
students are much more likely to remain interested. This can be seen most
clearly with children at primary and secondary levels, but even adults need a
varied died to keep them stimulated (Harmer 1998:5).
However,
variety is not the same as anarchy. Despite what teacher has said, students tend to like a
certain amount of predictability: they appreciate a safe structure which they
can rely on. And too much chopping and changing-too much variety in a
fifty-minute lesson-can be destabilizing. Good teacher find a balance between
predictability safety and unexpected variety (Harmer 1998: 5).
Based
on the explanation above the writer would like to say teacher behavior is very
important to solve stressed the need for variety within a secure setting. We
have said that teachers need to walk a fine line between predictability and
surprise, without lurching into either monotony or anarchy.
2.8 Teacher’s Pre-Arranged Plan
It
is one thing to be able to plan lessons which will have variety-an issue but
being flexible when the class is actually taking place is another matter
altogether. Once again, a balance has to be struck between teachers attempting
to achieve what they set out to achieve on the one hand and responding to what
students are saying or doing on the other (Harmer 1998: 5).
Suppose
that the teacher has planned that the students should prepare a dialogue and
then act it out, after which there is a reading text and some exercises for
them to get through. The teacher has allowed twenty minutes for dialogue
preparation and acting out. But when the students start working in this
activity, it is obvious that they need more time. The teacher than discovers
that they would like to spend at least half the lesson on just the acting-out
phase which they are finding helpful and enjoyable. At that moment, he or she
has to decide whether to abandon the original plan and go along with the
students’ wishes or whether it is better to press ahead regardless (Harmer
1998: 6).
Good
teacher are flexible enough to cope with these situations. Because they are
focusing on the students and what they need, they are able to react quickly to
the unplanned event. Perhaps, in the case of the pairs who finish early, for
example, they have a couple of quick useful tasks up their sleeves’ which they
can ask the pairs to do while they’re waiting. Good teacher recognize that
their plans are only prototypes and they may have to abandon some or all of
them if things are going too fast or too slow. Good teacher are flexible
(Harmer 1998: 6).
Based
on the explanation above the writer would to say teacher pre-arranged very
important to concentrated on the teacher’s ability to respond flexibly to what
happens in class, even while attempting to follow a pre-arranged plan.
2.9 Summary of
The Ron Clark Story
The story begins with Clark leaving his
small hometown in North Carolina, hoping that he can also make a big teaching
in the big city .carrying high hope and big dreams, Clark embraced the busy
live in the city, working as a waiter for a restaurant at a part time job .He
was able to land in Harlem public school despite discouragements from friends
and colleagues. Think that he is too weak and too nice for the 6th grades
students who belong to the bottom group of the graduating students’. Reluctant
that Clark can make it. He was given the task of improving the class score and
passed the state examination.
Clark endures the rudeness of the class
on the 1st time and suffers even worst as the day passed but Clark never gives
up on them. Instead, he tries to know his students better by visiting them at
their time. One of them was Shemeika Wallace, a 12 year old girl while helping
to raise his brother and sisters. She lives at home with her mother, who works
two jobs, and she has to take care of her little brothers, so she can't do her
homework and can't be a kid. To cover her feelings about not being able to do
anything, she just pretends she doesn't want to work and doesn't want to do
anything at school.
Julio Vasques who is juvenile delinquent
and Tayshawn who has a penchant for graffiti. With that, he sees the reasons
why the students acted the way; they didn’t get much attention and importance
from their family. Since then, He treats his students as his family and works
beyond and above his profession, to reach out to them. He created distinctive
rules in his classroom and uses contemporary teaching methods and techniques
suited for his students. He tries to renovate the classroom and make it more
feasible for his students to learn. He gives incentives to them and makes them
feel that they can trust him. But despite all these efforts, the students have
not appreciated a single act from him. That is the time that he almost gives
up. Despite having disheartened spirit, Ron Clark still believes in the ability
and flair of the each the students in his class, He has in his mind the thought
that the kids can do more than mind what he is asking them to do, with that in
mind, he tried to recharge and revive his strength by exploring New York city
with a friend and go back to school with a rejuvenated purpose of helping his
students dream big and make it real.
Students think that Ron Clark will not
show up again just like their previous teacher. Much to their surprised, Clark
comes back with better and brighter ideas on how he can “fit in” he tries to
build rapport by playing with them and teaching them on his spare time. He gave
exciting challenges to promote silence and good study habits. He applies
different teaching strategies and thing of how the kind best acquire learning.
He intensified his intensive scheme and make sure that kids work are
appreciated. He even tries to do choose for his students just to make sure that
they will do their homework. Some parents get mad at him, assuming that the is
already meddling with the private interest, but he always address the need of
these kids to have time to study to achieve their highest potentials. With all
these and more, he gradually sees the academic improvement of the class and the
changes in their behavior are tremendously notice. Clark constantly the
importance of having big quotes aims and making them come true which inspire
the students do their best to pass the state exam. He always does the extra
mile in teaching them and spends almost all of his time educating the students.
His health suffers from pneumonia but that does not stop him from reviewing the
students for the exam. He has recorded instructional videos for them to watch.
After the state exam, Ron Clark organizes a small party for a job well done and
to honor outstanding students. The principle arrives that with the good news,
it was the result of the state exam. Everyone was amazed with how the class
performed, Ron Clark’s class turned out to be the best performing class in the
school, they even out do the honor class. One remarkable result was one of the
students; Shameika Wallace got a perfect score, which no one of the district
ever does. Ron Clark was delighted and ecstatic. Seeing his students going one
step closer their dreams (The Ron Clark Story
Movie).
Based
on the explanation above, the writer conclude that the character of a good
teacher is someone which cares more about their students’ learning than they do
about their own teaching, the teacher can make his/her students to interest
with their lesson, teacher must have more knowledge and he/she loved his job
not only his subject, based on the all theory the writer only use theory from
Harmer (1998) as the one reverence to conduct the research and the other theory
only supplement.
CHAPTER
III
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
This
chapter presents the method which was used in the study. It discusses about the research design, data resource, research instrument, research procedure and data analysis
3.1 Research Design
Qualitative research, on the other hand,
is concerned with qualitative phenomenon, where phenomena relating to or
involving quality or kind. Qualitative research is especially important in the
behavioral sciences where the aim is to discover the underlying motives of human
behavior (Kothari 2004: 4). In this research the writer used descriptive
Qualitative method. It is documentary
analysis to analyze the character of a good teacher in “The Ron Clark Story”
movie by Randa Haines.
3.2 Data Resource
The data used in this writing taken from “The Ron
Clark Story” movie by Randa Haines. The writer will analyze the main character
incliuded in the movie, Ron Clark is that a teacher.
3.3 Research Instrument
There are several methods of collecting
primary data, particularly in surveys and descriptive researches. Important
ones are: observation methods, interview method, through questionnaires,
through schedules and test. The observation method is the most commonly used
method especially in studies relating to behavioral sciences (Kothari 2004:
96). Based on the explanation above the writer will choose observation method
as an instrument to get the data.
3.4 Research Procedure
The procedure used by the writer in
this research are :
1.
The writer watched the “The Ron Clark Story” movie rapidly.
2.
The writer wrote the important point that related to research
problem.
3. The writer analyzed the Ron Clark as the main
character in “The Ron Clark Story” movie as a good teacher.
4. The writer wrote and report the result of this research.
3.5 Data Analysis
Analysis, particularly in case of survey
or experimental data, involves estimating the values of unknown parameters of
the population and testing of hypotheses for drawing inferences. Analysis may,
therefore, be categorized as descriptive analysis and inferential analysis,
Descriptive analysis largely the study of distributions of one variable
(Kothari 2004: 130). In this research, the writer used descriptive analysis to describe the character as a character of good
teacher in “The Ron Clark Story” movie by Randa Haines.
CHAPTER IV
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
This chapter present the result of this study which discussed into
two sub-headings namely finding and discussion.
4.1
Findings
4.1.1
Character
The movie has two characters; it is major character and minor
character.
A)
Major Character
1)
Ron Clark
Ron Clark is an incredible
character and amazing teacher. He was so creative in the way that he worked
with his students and got the respect and attention of kids who had never paid
attention in school. People of every age can enjoy this movie because it's
about the empowerment of people.
His students saw someone who
genuinely cared about them. The key to what he did for these students was to
respect each as an individual and help them see themselves and their future in
a new light. It's deeply inspiring on the best level about how one individual
can make such an incredible difference in the lives of others. Ron Clark
follows the inspiring tale of an energetic, creative and idealistic young
teacher who leaves his small North Carolina hometown to teach in a New York
City public school. Through his passionate use of special rules for his
classroom, highly innovative teaching techniques and an undying devotion to his
students and helping them cope with their problems; Clark is able to make a
remarkable difference in the lives of his students. For one young girl trying
to attend school while helping to raise her brothers, he offers a chance for
her to overcome her situation and become one of the class' top students. For a
young man with a penchant for graffiti, he offers an ideal outlet for artistic
expression. Even when he is almost overcome by pneumonia, Clark continues to
work with his students, hoping that he can raise their test scores to an
acceptable level, or possibly even higher. Ron is very strict and expects a lot
of the kids, but he is also very supportive, loving and nurturing. He walks
into a situation where his new class is going crazy and he tries his small-town
methods in calming his kids down, but realizes that those methods don't work in
Harlem, so he has to acclimate to the situation (see in appenndix especially in quotes from The Ron Clark Story Movie, 00
: 29 : 14 until 00 : 29 : 45, 00 : 37 : 45 until 00 : 41 : 00 and 00 : 41 : 35
until 00 : 43 : 09).
B)
Minor character
In the Ron Clark story
movie, there many minor characters
that is: MarisaVega, Principal Turner, Shameika Wallace, Tayshawn, Julio
Vasques, Badriyah, Alita, Raaquel, Doretha Wallace and Yolanda.
1. Marissa
Vega
Marissa Vega is a woman who always
supports Ron Clark, she works in a restaurant where Clark works in his spare
time, she is Ron Clark’s best friend, and she is very loyal to Clark. When Ron
Clark wants to give up and quit teaching she doesn't let him throw in the towel
because he won't let her throw in the towel. She wants to quit acting, and he
inspired her to get back into what she always wanted to do. So when she sees
him wanting to quit, she tries to talk him out of it because she knows how good
he is at teaching. She sees herself in these kids, and she doesn't want him to
give up. He has such a passion for teaching that she couldn't let him leave (see in appenndix especially in quotes from The Ron
Clark Story Movie, 00 : 07 : 28 until 00 : 07 : 56, 00 : 20 : 03 until 00 : 21
: 38 and 00 : 35 : 24 until 00 : 37 : 10)..
2. Principal
Turner
He is head master in Harlem
elementary school New York, at first he meets Clark who is finding job to teach
in his school, Principal Turner doesn’t believe Clark able to teach in Harlem
elementary school, but the first impression is that he is a guy who is
certainly out of his element. He is a white guy coming into a predominately
black school, and he kind of behaves like a kid. Initially his character
doesn't believe Ron is able to handle the demands of the job, that he's the
wrong person for the position. But there is something about his eagerness that
makes him appealing to Principal Turner
(see in appenndix, 00 : 09 : 00 until 00 : 10 : 51).
.
3. Shameika
Wallace
A smart little girl who believes
that Clark is an intruder in what she sees as her school. She is a 12-year-old
girl who is just a hard person. She lives at home with her mother, who works
two jobs, and she has to take care of her little brothers, so she can't do her
homework and can't be a kid. To cover her feelings about not being able to do
anything, she just pretends she doesn't want to work and doesn't want to do
anything at school (see in appenndix,
00 : 53 : 17 until 00 : 55 : 00).
4.
Tayshawn
Tayshawn is the worst
of all the students Mr. Clark has to teach. He has no father, lives in a foster
home and is very street smart. He has never really built up any social skills,
and, as a result, he doesn't have any friends. He comes together with Mr. Clark
and they bond. There is something about him that lets Tayshawn know he really
cares, unlike his previous teachers. Tayshawn had failed two grades and was the
class bully, and Mr. Clark comes and instills pride in him and lets him know he
can succeed. The sky's the limit.
Tayshawn is the ultimate artist. He
can take a chair and turn it into a montage of art. He is a really creative kid
and uses his art as a way to escape his life. The most important rule is
respecting others. Tayshawn is scared to be the best student he can be, because
he doesn't want the ridicule of others
(see in appenndix, 00 : 58 : 15 until 00 : 59 : 16 and 01 : 00 : 51 until 01 :
01 : 13).
.
5.
Julio Vasquez
Julio is a student who is always
trying to con his way into getting good grades or getting money. Although he
tries to con people to get money, he can't do math or count. He is one of the
troublemakers in Mr. Clark's class - the class clown in the school. The most
important rule was that we are a family. When he came in and introduced that
rule, he wanted us to feel the connection between student and teacher. The
family rule made us realize we could trust each other and him (see in appenndix, 00 : 49 : 36 until 00 : 50 : 29 and
00 : 52 : 00 until 00 : 53 : 10).
6.
Badriyah
Badriyah likes to read
and study, but when she mentions that during her new teacher’s visit with her
parents, her father shuts her up, saying, “Men are talking.” Thank goodness Ron
Clark, teacher extraordinaire, has arrived to save them (see in appenndix, 00 : 13 : 02 until 00 : 13 : 22).
7.
Alita
She is Shameika
friends; she with shameika and Raquel didn’t do the journal that is given by
Ron Clark (see in appenndix, 00 : 33 :
37 until 00 : 33 : 49).
8.
Raquel
She is shameika
classmate. When Ron Clark asked about the journal, she sleeps in the class, and
she didn’t do it (see in appenndix,
00 : 33 : 26 until 00 : 33 : 49).
9.
Doretha Wallace
Doretha Wallace is Shameika
Wallace’s mother; she is single parent with 3 children, she always asking for
Shameika to help her taking care of little sisters when mother works. Before
Clark come, Doretha does not pay attention about Shameika School, but after
Clark explains that Shameika Is clever, she understand that Shameika has to study,
not works (see in appenndix, 00 : 55 :
14 until 00 : 55 : 33 and 00 : 55 : 48 until 00 : 57 : 51).
10.
Yolanda
Yolanda is receptionist in the
apartment where Ron Clark stays (see in
appenndix, 00 : 04 : 41 until 00 : 04 : 47 and 00 : 05 : 29 until 00 : 06 :
05).
4.2 Discussion
4.2.1 Ron
Clark as the main characters as a good teacher in the movie
As to ways of
revelation or presenting a character in a movie. There are direct and indirect
ways. Indirect presentation the director tell the audience straight out by
exposition or analysis, what the character is like or what someone else in the
story tells them what character is like. On the other hand, indirect
presentation the director shows the audience the character in action.
They know the character
from what the thinks or say or does, both methods, however must be used
together. In analyzing the main character in Ron Clark story, the writer
combines the way the director reveal Ron Clark as the main character in different
way.
How to be a
good teacher based on Harmer’s theories:
1. A good teacher should make their lesson
interesting
Based on the Harmer’s theory, a good teacher should
make their lesson interesting so the writer quote from the movie when Ron Clark
as teacher in the movie make his students interest. The first efforts he made
to make the lesson interesting. He
created distinctive rules in his classroom such as the students must come and
out of the class in the lines, he also say to the students they are a family.
Tries to renovate the classroom, and make it more feasible for his students to
learn. He has creative to make the students interest in the classroom, the wall
classroom has white color but he thing it can make the students bored and he
renovate the classroom in blue color to make students interest in the
classroom. He patch the picture that say about “we are family” in the whole
classroom. To make the students know they are family. He gives incentives to
them and makes them feel that they can trust him .But despite all these
efforts, the students did not appreciate a single act from him”.
He also makes the strategy and method in teaching in
the classroom but the students not does it. He uses contemporary
teaching methods and techniques suited for his students such as game.
That is the time that he almost gives
up. Despite having disheartened spirit, Ron Clark still believes in the ability
and flair of the teach the students in his class, He has in his mind the
thought that the kids can do more than mind what he is asking them to do With
that in mind, he tried to recharge and revive his strength by exploring New
York city with a friend and go back to school with a rejuvenated purpose of
helping his students to have big dream and make it real, students think Ron
Clark will not show up again just like their previous teacher. He gave exciting
challenges to promote silence like as when he teaches grammar, he makes the
students silent in the class. He uses the game in teaching grammar, if the
students’ silent every 15 minutes he wants to drink chocolate milk and it can
make the students silent.
His effort success and can
make the students interest to hear on his teaching.
2.
Teacher must love her/ his job.
The writer quote in the
movie, the main character Ron Clark is a teacher and he loves his job much.
When he was could not meet the students to teach them but he make a strategy
for his students to get the lesson as he record his teaching about gravity in
video tape and give to the principal Turner to play it. Clark endures the
rudeness of the class at the first time and suffers even worst as the day
passed but Clark never gives up on them. Instead, he tries to know his students
better by visiting them at their time, His health suffers from pneumonia but
that does not stop him from reviewing the students for the exam. He has
recorded instructional videos for them to watch.
This is the real proof
Ron Clark is very love his job as a teacher.
3.
teacher have lots of knowledge, not only of his subject.
Ron Clark has a lot of knowledge
because he can make change in Harlem elementary school. He can teach the
students from the low level until the students have knowledge and pass the test
with the best score. He
applies different teaching strategies and thing of how the kind best acquire
learning. He intensified his intensive scheme and make sure that kids work are
appreciated. The principle arrives that with the good news, it was the result
of the state exam. Everyone was amazed with how the class performed, Ron
Clark’s class turned out to be the best performing class in the school, they
even out do the honor class. One remarkable result was one of the students;
Shameika Wallace got a perfect score.
4. Teacher must be
Entertainer
In the movie the writer analyze Ron
Clark is very entertainer because he can make good relation with the students
like as play together with them, help the students do the homework and he make
his students as his family in school or out of school. He tries to build
rapport by playing with them like as he make a deal, if the students teach him
in playing double-dutch than the students can learn something from him, the
students can know everything for seventh grade and the students agree with it.
He make a small party in the class, he ask his students to light the candles
that symbolizes they are joined together and if the students trust him the
students can learn more than the students dream of. He also playing with his
students although in the classroom, like as when his students don’t fail in the
pass the test, he makes his students licked lips and happy with sing and dance
together with his students.
In Ron Clark Story, Ron Clark is a
responsible person. As human being Ron Clark character, both positive and
negative. The positive sides of in the Ron Clark story are:
a. Strong
The writer can
illustrate how strong Ron Clark was. He was great teacher he started teaching
the students at the inner elementary school. The students can’t be managed and
they are naughty. But he is able to change their behavior become good students.
b. Responsible
The writer can
illustrate his responsible, His health suffers from pneumonia but that does not
stop him from reviewing the students for the exam. He has recorded
instructional videos for them to watch. After the state exam, Ron Clark
organizes a small party for a job well done and to honor outstanding students.
c. Self Confidence
He is one extraordinary
individual who has a great faith on your youth today and has the passion on
helping others to uplift their well being. He is a simple person who believes
in dreams and work hard to achieve it. Certainly, he is one great person worthy
of emulation.
d. Hard worker
Work hard is the key to
become success, Ron Clark wants to change students in Harlem elementary school
become smarts class. He must work hard to do it and finally him able to change
them.
4.2.2
Ron Clark as a model of
good teacher
As presented in preveous chapter, Harmer said that a good
teacher must should make their lesson
interesting, the writer aanalyzed that Ron Clark as a good teacher has those
characters of a good teacher. He made his lessons interesting. He loved
his job as teacher. Ron Clark also had lots of knowledge not only inside class
but also outside of his class. Another character that showed that Ron Clark was
a good teacher is that he had a positive sense of his job, students and his
subjects.
His characters as
a good teacher was shown when taught his subjects in the class. First when
he taught English lesson, he tried to attract students’ attention by giving challenge if his students answered
his question about verb in sentences correctly he would drink chocolate milk in
every fifteen minute. His strategy worked as he expected. The students focused
in learning the subject. At this point, Ron Clark showed that a good teacher
will do everything to make his students enjoy the lesson by using the right
strategy.
The next subject that
he taught in the movie was Social Sciences. In this subject taught his subject
to students by using song. He asked his students to sing with him about the
forty two presidents of USA chronologically. His students sang and dance with him
while asking them to remember the name and period of term of each president. In
this strategy Ron Clark showed how to teach students using song as medium of
learning because song is an easy tool to use in learning. It can increase
students’ memory on something they learn.
In teaching natural
sciences subject, Ron Clark shown character of a good teacher using audio
visual method. Ron Clark tough about gravitasi and strategie that used by Ron
Clark was using egg. Ron Clark fall down the egg on the floor and the egg broke
on the floor, after he give the example he explained about gravitasi.
And the last
subject was math, Ron Clark shown character
of a good teacher threugh teach his students
in free time, Julio was his student that couldn’t count but he like
playing card, Ron Clark got the idea to teach Julio count thhreug playing card
and count in card.
The Ron Clark Story is
a good supplementary material enrichment for teaching in English class. Therefore,
in this chapter the writer presents how the movie can be applied in the
teaching in English grammar class. This study proves that students will get
much benefit from learning English grammar. It is not only taking pleasure but
also to learn moral values in class.
Many professions are
difficult because they require strict adherence to a set of rules, often
complex, often difficult to learn. Surgeons must perform their surgeries
exactly as taught to them in medical school, engineers must keep their designs
within specifications laid out by the laws of physics and the government,
scientists must perform experiments exactly as described in the experiment
procedure. All of these professions (and many more) leave very little room for
individualization. Other professions are difficult because they are entirely
individualized. One such profession is teaching. Each teacher, though issued
standards they have to meet and laws they have to follow, largely has to
develop his or her (for style purposes, “his” will be used instead of his or
her) own methods of teaching. In order to effectively determine how to teach,
any given teacher must figure out his educational philosophy. Princeton’s Word
Net defines education as “the gradual process of acquiring knowledge” and
philosophy as “a belief or system of beliefs.
The writer will analyze
Ron Clark as a good teacher has shown from five characteristics of a good teacher
that show by the movie:
The first
characteristic is purpose of formal education. It extends beyond the questions
of how individual teachers ought to teach and beg for a normative analysis of
the goals of formal education; the purpose of formal education extends far
beyond merely imparting knowledge to students. I think the number one purpose
of formal education is to develop the entire student, both talents and
character. The first and most obvious talent to develop in a school setting is
intellect. The writer believes it goes without saying that development of
intelligence is important within a school setting. Perhaps just as important to
the development of the child and the overall success of the learning
environment, however, is development of personal abilities. When a teacher
cultivates a child’s God-given talents, especially if he can relate it to the
course work, the student is likely to become more interested in school. The Ron
Clark Story illustrated this concept very well. Mr. Clark was able to help
Tayshawn, one of his most problematic students, become more interested in
learning after he recognized and supported Tayshawn’s artistic abilities. Just
as important as cultivating these talents is cultivating the character of each
student. Not only were our minds and talents developed, but we also were
encouraged to grow as people. Through this development of our character
(through service projects, class retreats, and several in-class events) we as a
collective student body seemed to become better learners. This concept was
illustrated very well, again, by the Ron Clark Story. In it, Mr. Clark works at
trying to develop Shamika as a leader by doing things like giving her control
of the class while he steps out. Through this development, Shamika seems to
become a better person and as a result she is able to get a perfect score on
the end of year state exams. The importance of character (and by extension
behavioral) growth in determining ability to learn is underscored by the simple
fact that Ron Clark started his class by setting up rules for discipline. By
developing their character, emphasizing proper behavior and, most importantly,
respect, Mr. Clark ensured the success of his students. The importance of
development of the whole person, that is to say character along with talents,
is evident through the concept that character affects learning. The writer
feels that schools have the capability and as results are required to be the
catalyst for change within society,
The next characteristic
is the teacher can help students learn. The first and most important thing a
teacher can do is to get to know his students. A personal relationship with the
students serves as a motivating force because it empowers the students, making
them feel important. It also makes the students comfortable learning and
growing in the classroom.
The next is teachers
address student differences, is a divergence from the trend established in the
first two, dealing largely with how to handle diversity. As different as that
is from the second question, the answer is the same: a teacher must get to know
his students. A teacher cannot address differences without knowing what they
are. Once these differences are known, a teacher can best deal with them by
shining the spotlight on them, perhaps by having the students take turn
discussing what make them different from the rest. This is important because
hiding diversity is detrimental to the education process as well as society on
the whole. After these spotlights are shone, the next step is to start
dialogues. By discussing differences, students can learn more about those
differences and begin to unravel the web of stereotypes surrounding different
cultures and races. With these discussions about difference, teachers and
students alike can begin to gain a deeper understanding of why some students
might behave poorly or why they feel like outsiders.
The next is what are
practices that all teachers should employ, is really just universalizing the
second question; however its answer involves different concepts. This does not
fall into the realm of the second question because it does not directly help
students learn, but rather it fosters an environment where students are
comfortable and treated with fairness. To be truly fair is simply to give each
student what they need, even if that means giving more to one student than to
another. To adequately accomplish this goal, one must be subjective in his
teaching because to be objective would require that every student get the same.
Objectivity does not allow for difference. The last thing all teachers should
do is issue their own punishments. This allows for greater control over the
classroom. By issuing punishments, a teacher has the capability of developing a
greater bond with the student. This concept is illustrated in the Ron Clark
Story when Mr. Clark intentionally does not inform the principal of Tayshawn’s
fight (and thus prevents his expulsion) and as a result Tayshawn’s affection
grows.
The last characteristic
is how can teachers create a safe and effective learning environment, is in
essence a culmination of all the previous ones. A teacher can create a safe
(ideologically speaking, students are safe to learn) and effective learning
environment by creating an atmosphere in which students are comfortable sharing
ideas.
By emphasizing this
kind of atmosphere, teachers can create a much more academic environment. To
generate this type of atmosphere, teachers must at first start with emphasizing
respect. Mr. Clark again illustrates this concept very well with his emphasis
that his class is a family from day one. The insistence on respect created an
atmosphere where students felt comfortable speaking in class and as a result
was capable of excelling.
The writer feels that
teachers must get to know their students and those they must individualize
their instruction in an atmosphere where every student feels comfortable
voicing their opinion.

strategy like game and sing, before h start teach he made approach between
students and students’ parents to give explain about why the parents must help
the students in study. In approach Ron Clark shown the way how to made the
students that have any work and didn’t do homework, the way that used by Ron
Clark was help the students in free time.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND
SUGGESTIONS
A. Conclusions
Based on the story With
Ron Clark’s unending hard work, undying perseverance and enduring faith
dictates the success of each and every character in the story, that despite the
tough and wearisome task of the educating children whose undergoing different
life situations, it is still our faith and will that will lead us to the
greater glory. This story is one of the best created films at all time,
inspiring not only teachers and educator but also ordinary people who find
themselves hanging on to that one great goal of achieving their dreams.
The movie is highly
recommended to inspiring teachers like the writer, whose knowledge on choosing
and applying teaching strategies and techniques are still minimal. Helpful
information on classroom and class management is more than enough to give us
ideas on how to deal with different types of the students especially for
problematic ones. Thoughts on multiple intelligence and global teaching methods
were shown which are beneficial for the students to acquire learning.
The writer would like
to conclude that:
Ron Clark was the main character, he was shown the characteristic of a good teacher such
as when he made his lesson interresting through renovated classroom and made
game in teaching, he love his job, he shown it through when he sick and did not
teach his students but he recorded his instruction in video for his students to
wach. He has lots of knowledge, he shown it in the movie when hew teach, he
made strategies like made game in teaching. Hewas entertainer, he shown it
in the movie, when he played with them and
made game in teaching. Ron Clark represent a
teacher who in this he is a good teacher and has positives sides such as
responsible, strong, confident, and hard worker.
B. Suggestion
The movie gives readers
an insight that the teacher should respond upon diverse situations and unusual
attitude and feelings of the students, parents and colleagues. Generally, it is
one great movie that people should not fail to watch. Viewers will discover new
things that will help us not only to be a better teacher but to be the best
one. Furthermore, the story can show viewers that learning indeed should not be
restricted within the four walls of a classroom and that the greatest lesson
can be acquired when we learn to help other people and learn to love them. This
movie is recommended to be watch by English students in UKAW for they are going
to be a teacher. Through the movie English students will get much information
related to a good teacher. This movie inspiring not only for teachers and
educator but also for ordinary people to get the goal of achieving their dream.
